Volvo Ocean Race, Team SCA

2014-2015 - Volvo Ocean Race

Team SCA | All-Female Crew

Role: Racing Crew

Team SCA was the first all-female team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race since 2002. Twelve of the best female offshore sailors in the world, racing around the planet together. My second lap of the world and this one felt historic.

I was Watch Captain, responsible for my watch on deck through some of the most demanding conditions in offshore racing. The Southern Ocean, the doldrums, the North Atlantic. Nine months, nine stops, tens of thousands of miles.

What I took from Team SCA went beyond the racing. I'd spent years trying to break into a world that had largely been reserved for men. Being part of a team that proved women could compete at this level, on this stage, on this course, meant something that's hard to put into words.

After the race I went straight to the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard in Lisbon, stripping these boats down and rebuilding them from the ground up. I wanted to know every bolt, every system, every weakness. It made me a better sailor and set me up for everything that came next.
