Volvo Ocean Race - Turn the Tide on Plastic
2017-2018 - Volvo Ocean Race ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’
Role: Racing Crew / Boat Captain / Watch Leader
My third Volvo Ocean Race and this one felt different. Turn the Tide on Plastic was a campaign with a purpose beyond racing, amplifying the United Nations Environment's message about plastic pollution to ports around the world.
I grew up in Papua New Guinea, surrounded by some of the most remote and beautiful ocean in the world. I've seen first hand what plastic pollution does to those places. Being part of a campaign that could genuinely make an impact on that issue meant everything to me.
I joined as Boat Captain, bringing more miles on the Volvo Ocean 65 than any other sailor on the planet at that point, over 80,000 nautical miles since the end of the Team SCA campaign. I knew these boats inside out.
Racing around the world with a mixed crew, stopping at Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Auckland, Newport and beyond, it was my third lap of the planet and it never gets old.
